A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.
The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
